That’s Not Something I Can Do For You

Amelia shows us she didn't need me to be brave.

This afternoon I enjoyed soaking up some sun and working on my laptop while my four year old daughter, Amelia, ran wild with our dogs. I was catching zips and dashes of her brightly colored outfit as she scamped around the yard. At one point I saw her standing in front of our playhouse, talking to herself. The following conversation took place:

Amelia – “Okay, you can do this. Deep breath. Just do it. You can be brave. One step in front of the another step.”

Me – “Smalls, you mean one step  in front of the other.”

Amelia – “That’s especially what I said.”

Me – “Exactly.”

Loud sigh from Amelia.

Me – “What are you doing?”

Amelia – “I want to get my trike but I think a spider is going to fall on my head and pull my hair. I need to be brave, but….but can you do it for me?”

Me – “No.”

Amelia – “Can you just help me be brave?”

Me – “No.”

Amelia – “MOM! Can you JUST help ME put one foot in another?”

Me – “No. That is something you have to do yourself.

Amelia – “Mom, please? I know you are brave.”

Me – “I know I am brave, too. Now you have to be brave. You’ll be fine. Its genetic.”

Amelia – “Mom, come on. Just help me be brave.”

Me – “That’s not something I can do for you.”

Amelia put her hands on her hips, turned away from me, and then walked away from the playhouse. I continued, lovingly, ignoring her. A few moments later I pretended not to notice as she walked up to the play house, squared her shoulders, took a deep breath, and proved to herself she is brave.

  3. I love this and, as a mom, I know how hard it is to hold back and let them do it for themselves. You are a brave mom!
